Kangpokpi, October 6: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, has called for a 48-hour economic blockade in Kangpokpi district starting from midnight of October 7, alleging government inaction over the abduction and torture of Kamginlen Chongloi of Makhan Village near Indira Gandhi National Tribal University on October 2.
CoTU said the Ministry of Home Affairs has shown a “blatant reluctance to ensure security preparedness” in buffer zones, accusing the government of ignoring repeated concerns over the safety of Kuki-Zo residents. It argued that this inaction has eroded confidence among the tribal population living in vulnerable areas.
The committee noted that its ultimatum served on October 4 had expired without any response, leaving it “compelled” to enforce the blockade until midnight of October 9. The demand includes rectifying security lapses and ensuring commuter safety on key routes, particularly between Kangpokpi and Churachandpur through the volatile stretches of Makhan and Leikhanpokpi.
Stressing that the decision was not just a protest but an act of self-protection, CoTU maintained that the blockade was necessary in light of the government’s failure to act decisively on the issue.
