AIZAWL, April 11:The Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (CYMA), a leading civil society organization in Mizoram, has reaffirmed its call for the state government to establish a structured and comprehensive policy for the care and management of over 42,000 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently residing across the state.
The Association’s Central Coordination Committee (CCC) reviewed the progress made by a special committee formed by CYMA to draft proposals concerning refugee management. This initiative stems from resolutions passed at the CYMA’s conference held in October last year, where the organization urged the government to identify shelter homes in designated locations and issue detailed guidelines for handling refugees and IDPs from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur.
CYMA general secretary Malsawmliana stated, “The meeting decided to make more efforts to ensure that the state government designates appropriate shelter locations for housing the refugees, and frame proper and comprehensive guidelines for handling and governing them.”
According to the Mizoram Home Department, the state is currently providing shelter to more than 42,000 refugees and internally displaced persons. This includes over 33,000 individuals from Myanmar’s Chin State, around 7,000 ethnic Kuki-Zo people displaced from Manipur, and more than 2,000 Bawm refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
The Association’s renewed push for policy action reflects growing concerns over the long-term management and welfare of displaced populations seeking refuge in Mizoram.
