NEW DELHI, Dec 9: Inner Manipur Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Monday sharply criticised the Lok Sabha for failing to address what he termed the “real issues” facing the country, particularly the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Manipur.
Speaking during a discussion on Vande Mataram, Akoijam said the debate had been diverted toward political interests in West Bengal while urgent national concerns were being sidelined.
Reiterating his long-pending demand, Akoijam said he has repeatedly sought “at least a three to five hour discussion on Manipur,” but the appeals have gone unanswered. He stressed that the situation in the state remains dire, with nearly 65,000 people still homeless due to the ethnic conflict that erupted last year.
Calling the mass displacement a direct outcome of the government’s “failure to impose Constitutional order” in Manipur, Akoijam argued that merely debating symbolic issues has little meaning in the face of such widespread suffering. “Unemployment, pollution, the Manipur crisis—we don’t discuss,” he said, highlighting Parliament’s silence on the humanitarian emergency.
He further remarked that the true way to honour Vande Mataram is by fulfilling constitutional duties and addressing the pain of citizens. The MP’s comments have renewed demands for a dedicated debate on Manipur, even as the winter session continues with a packed political agenda.
