Imphal, July 23: Dengue fever is rapidly spreading across Manipur, with 91 confirmed cases and 150 suspected cases reported across 11 districts, raising serious public health concerns. One person has died in Bishnupur district in the first half of 2025, according to data released by the Directorate of Health Services.
Imphal West leads the count with 50 confirmed cases, followed by Imphal East (11), Thoubal (9), Bishnupur (8), Kakching (4), Ukhrul (3), and one case each in Churachandpur, Kamjong, Senapati, Tamenglong, Chandel, and Tengnoupal. The widespread nature of the outbreak has put health officials on high alert.
The National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) highlights a worrying trend, with Manipur recording 2,463 dengue cases and five deaths in 2024. The rising number of infections in recent years—359 in 2019, 37 in 2020, 203 in 2021, 503 in 2022 (with four deaths), and 2,548 in 2023—indicates an escalating public health challenge.
The dengue virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in clean, stagnant water and are most active during the day. Health authorities have urged the public to eliminate potential breeding grounds by clearing waterlogged areas and maintaining hygiene.
However, the situation is compounded by poor sanitation and a shortage of mosquito control supplies, especially in relief camps housing displaced populations. The government has begun fogging operations and chemical treatment of mosquito nets, but gaps in preparedness remain evident.
