New Delhi, July 23: The Election Commission of India has formally initiated the process for electing a new Vice President following the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar. The move comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs received and notified Dhankhar’s resignation, which he tendered citing health reasons.
With the Vice President’s office now vacant, the Commission is undertaking preparatory measures, including the compilation of the electoral college comprising both elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. These steps are prerequisites to the formal announcement of the election schedule, which is expected soon.
The Vice Presidential election is conducted under the mandate of Article 324 of the Constitution, in accordance with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and its corresponding rules framed in 1974.
