New Delhi, October 22: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday began a crucial two-day meeting with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and union territories to review preparations for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the country.
The meeting, being held at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Dwarka, New Delhi, will conclude on Thursday after a series of review sessions aimed at assessing state-level readiness for the nationwide voter list update.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vineet Joshi, along with Deputy Election Commissioners and senior ECI officials, are attending the deliberations.
According to ECI officials, the meeting will evaluate compliance with directions issued during the previous session held on September 10, which had outlined preparatory steps for the SIR process. The Commission had earlier directed state officials to map as many electors as possible to previous electoral rolls to reduce the need for document resubmission by voters.
In addition to reviewing the progress of voter list updates, several administrative and logistical issues are expected to be discussed. Sources said the Commission aims to identify areas requiring further work and set specific targets for completion.
A key focus of the discussions will be determining whether the Special Intensive Revision should be conducted simultaneously across all states or in two phases—depending on regional variations such as weather conditions, agricultural activities, examination schedules, and administrative convenience.
The two-day meeting marks the second such engagement between the ECI and state CEOs in just over a month, underscoring the Commission’s push to initiate the nationwide voter list revision by the end of this year.
