IMPHAL, June 28: Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday stated that efforts are actively underway to restore a popular government in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025. Expressing optimism about the political situation, Singh said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies are committed to reinstating elected governance in the strife-torn region.

Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of a programme held at the BJP state headquarters in Imphal, Singh said, “We are working to form a government at the earliest. After assessing the ground situation, I believe that a new government will be formed soon. BJP and its allies are united in the desire for restoration of a popular government.”

He reiterated that the party is focused on resolving the current crisis and has been regularly engaging with the central leadership to work toward an amicable solution. Singh emphasized that the central government is working round-the-clock to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, which has been grappling with prolonged ethnic and political unrest.

“We haven’t criticised anyone,” Singh said, “Our only concern is peace and stability. We are holding regular meetings with MLAs and key stakeholders because everyone wants peace to return. The past seven to eight months have seen no major incidents of inter-community violence, which is a hopeful sign.”

Addressing a query about broader regional challenges, Singh warned about the growing impact of illegal immigration and drug cartels across the Northeast and the rest of the country. “These elements have affected not just Manipur but the entire nation. The growing awareness of this issue is a positive step, and together we can confront and overcome these threats,” he added.
