NEW DELHI, March 20: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday emphasized the significance of empathy in journalism, stating that while Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming various sectors, it cannot replace journalism that is rooted in human values.

Addressing the 19th Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony, President Murmu acknowledged the growing presence of AI, which has begun to compile and edit reports, and may soon take over many tasks traditionally performed by journalists.

However, she pointed out that machines lack empathy, a key ingredient that will help human journalists stay ahead of AI. “Journalism based on human values will never become extinct,” she said, stressing that empathy will continue to play an irreplaceable role in the profession.

The President further emphasized the importance of free and fair journalism in maintaining a healthy democracy. She explained that without an informed citizenry, the democratic process loses its true essence, highlighting that a thriving newsroom, filled with fresh ideas, is crucial for the growth of the news business. Murmu also commended The Indian Express, founded by the late Ramnath Goenka, for being an exemplary model of quality journalism.

Underscoring the need for rigorous research and accuracy, President Murmu urged media organizations to invest more in promoting a culture of ground-level reporting. She reflected on how business models in media have evolved, noting that traditional newspapers and magazines focused on quality reporting, which helped boost readership and create a strong foundation for advertising. However, in recent years, hybrid business models have become more prominent.

In her speech, the President also raised concerns about the risks posed by deep fakes and other malicious uses of AI, urging the need to sensitize citizens, particularly the younger generation, to these threats. She highlighted the growing importance of media literacy in the digital age.

The Ramnath Goenka Awards, instituted by the Ramnath Goenka Foundation, not only celebrate excellence in journalism but also honor the legacy of Ramnath Goenka, a stalwart of Indian media. “He stood firm for press freedom, both before and after Independence,” President Murmu said, reflecting on Goenka’s commitment to free press during the Emergency. His publication’s blank editorial became a powerful symbol for the restoration of democratic rights.

“For Goenka-ji, the idea of service extended beyond journalism. His association with the Father of the Nation reflected his commitment to various social causes as well,” President Murmu added.

The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, presented annually since 2006, recognize outstanding contributions in print, digital, and broadcast journalism across 13 categories, including investigative journalism, sports, politics and government, books, features, and regional languages.
