IMPHAL, June 5: The flood situation in Manipur has significantly improved with water levels in the state’s major rivers receding, following decrease in rainfall. The development comes as a much-needed relief for residents who have endured relentless downpours and rising waters since May 31.
With the rainfall easing, pressure on flood-affected regions has lessened, paving the way for more coordinated and effective relief efforts. The Assam Rifles and the Indian Army remain actively engaged in rescue and relief activities under Operation Jalrahat-II, which continues across various flood-hit areas.
So far, 4,097 people have been successfully evacuated and are currently housed in 78 relief camps set up across the state. These camps are offering temporary shelter, food, and medical support to those displaced by the floods. The joint efforts of rescue teams and local authorities have been instrumental in ensuring swift and safe evacuations, even in remote areas severely impacted by the disaster.
The recent flooding has taken a heavy toll, affecting over 165,000 people across Manipur and damaging approximately 35,242 houses. Several rivers, including the Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul, overflowed and breached embankments, further worsening the situation. The damage to critical infrastructure has posed additional challenges to ongoing relief operations.
A tragic casualty was reported on Tuesday, when a 57-year-old man was swept away by floodwaters in the Imphal West district. The incident highlights the dangers posed by the swollen rivers and the urgency of continued safety measures for vulnerable communities.
The state’s agricultural sector has also suffered, with about 115.59 hectares of farmland damaged due to the heavy rains. This loss is expected to have longer-term consequences for local farmers and the overall rural economy. The state government is anticipated to introduce support measures for affected agricultural workers in the coming weeks.
Officials have urged residents and relief personnel to remain cautious, as weather conditions continue to be unpredictable. Relief operations are expected to continue until the situation fully stabilises. Authorities are closely monitoring forecasts to prepare for any further developments that may impact ongoing recovery efforts.
