ImphaL, July 29: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over his statements made during the Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, calling his remarks “ignorant” and “disrespectful” to India’s armed forces. The BJP leader went so far as to express personal dismay, saying he was “truly ashamed to say that he is from the Northeast.”
The sharp reaction from Biren Singh came after Gogoi, while addressing the Lok Sabha on July 28, criticized the Modi government’s handling of national security, particularly questioning the transparency behind the recent ceasefire with Pakistan and the government’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir.
Posting on social media platform X, Biren Singh said, “Opposition leader, Shri @GauravGogoiAsm’s ignorance of modern warfare is a bit concerning.” He defended the use of long-range precision strikes by the Indian Air Force under Operation Sindoor and accused Gogoi of mocking military strategy without understanding its value. “Questioning why our fighter jets did not engage at close range ignores the strategic brilliance of long-range precision strikes that ensured mission success and protected our soldiers,” he wrote.
The former chief minister further condemned Gogoi’s tone in Parliament, calling it “highly unbecoming of a political leader” and a “disservice to the nation.” He added that questioning the armed forces’ approach to combat terrorism undermines the sacrifices and professionalism of India’s defense personnel.
Gogoi, during his fiery speech in the Lok Sabha, had raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the sudden ceasefire agreement with Pakistan. “If Pakistan was about to surrender, who made us stop? To whom did we surrender?” he questioned, also referencing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he had pressured India and Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire using economic threats.
He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not personally addressing the House on such a critical matter and demanded answers regarding international financial institutions like the IMF allegedly aiding Pakistan, despite India’s diplomatic opposition.
Gogoi also took aim at Home Minister Amit Shah, blaming him for the security lapse that led to the terror attack in Pahalgam and questioned why the five perpetrators were still at large after more than 100 days, despite the use of drones, surveillance tools like Pegasus, and satellites.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier clarified that Operation Sindoor was an anti-terror mission targeting infrastructure across the border, not a territorial incursion. He reiterated that the goal was to dismantle terror camps and protect Indian lives.
Despite expressing solidarity with the armed forces, Gogoi concluded that the Opposition would continue to seek transparency and accountability. “We are not the enemy. We stand with our country and our armed forces, but we will continue to question the government on lies and deceit,” he said.
