IMPHAL, Feb 20: Intense political discussions unfolded in Manipur as BJP legislators gathered at the party office to deliberate on the formation of a new government following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. A closed-door meeting took place at ‘Thambal Sanglen,’ attended by BJP state president A. Sharda Devi and former minister Yumnam Khemchand, who indicated that the BJP MLAs would soon convene for a joint meeting to discuss the future course of action.
Post-meeting, Khemchand addressed the media, stating that since Biren Singh’s resignation, the BJP MLAs had not come together for a collective discussion as they had previously when a party leader was in place. He confirmed that a date would soon be set for the joint meeting, where they would focus on the formation of a new government. Khemchand also highlighted the necessity of this meeting to unify the party members and ensure smooth decision-making going forward.
Amid speculation over factionalism within the party and rumors of a potential new regional party, Khemchand vehemently dismissed such claims. “There is no rift among us; the idea of forming a new regional party is out of the question. If anyone is thinking about that, it’s nothing but daydreaming,” he asserted.
The possibility of the seven Kuki MLAs participating in the upcoming joint meeting was considered unlikely due to the ongoing political situation in the state. Regarding the selection of a new leader for the government, Khemchand remarked that the central leadership of the BJP would decide on that matter.
