Imphal, August 12: Four legislators from Manipur met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Monday, seeking urgent intervention on issues affecting the state’s border regions, particularly the suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the ongoing border fencing along the India–Myanmar frontier.
The delegation comprised Awangbou Newmai, Khashim Vashum, and Leishiyo Keishing of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), along with Independent MLA J. Kumo Sha. They highlighted the adverse impact of the FMR suspension on Naga communities living across the border, citing disruptions to centuries-old cultural, familial, and social ties.
The MLAs also raised concerns over the demarcation and fencing works, urging the Governor to facilitate an amicable resolution that protects the rights and interests of affected communities.
Their appeal comes amid mounting pressure from the United Naga Council (UNC), which has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the FMR and that the suspension has negatively impacted Naga communities on either side of the India-Myanmar border, severing historical, cultural, and familial ties.
