GUWAHATI, July 4: Barely days after services resumed on the Lumding-Badarpur hill section, a fresh landslide at Mupa has once again brought rail movement to a grinding halt, stranding hundreds of passengers aboard the Silchar-Guwahati Express and disrupting train services across the Northeast.
The landslide occurred early Thursday morning between Mupa and Dihakho stations, burying the tracks under a mass of boulders and debris at kilometre mark 51/2-3—an area known for landslip vulnerabilities during the monsoon. The Silchar-Guwahati Express (Train No. 15616) came to a standstill at Mupa Station, leaving passengers marooned in rain-drenched and remote terrain.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed the suspension of rail operations, stating, “Senior officials have reached the site. The track will remain closed until the debris is cleared. If the weather permits, services may resume within hours.”
This fresh disruption underscores the chronic fragility of the region’s transport infrastructure, where seasonal landslides frequently cripple connectivity between the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. Calls have once again grown louder for comprehensive geological assessments and long-term solutions to stabilize the hill section.
A number of trains were fully or partially cancelled, rescheduled, or regulated in response. These include:
