Imphal, July 28: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the functioning and capacity of the state’s forensic infrastructure, directing officials to expedite pending case clearances and modernize forensic services.
Held with senior officials from the Directorate of Forensic Sciences and the State Forensic Laboratory, the meeting focused on improving manpower, expanding technical capabilities, and strengthening institutional support. Proposals presented included the establishment of a mobile forensic unit and van, a new facility for explosive residue analysis, and a dedicated DNA testing wing.
The Governor acknowledged the urgent need to resolve forensic backlogs and improve investigative timelines. He emphasized timely clearances as crucial for ensuring justice and effective law enforcement in the state.
Officials from the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Manipur campus, highlighted the challenges faced due to inadequate infrastructure, though they noted progress with diploma and postgraduate diploma courses already underway in major forensic disciplines.
Later in the day, Bhalla presided over a ‘Governor-in-Council’ session at Raj Bhavan, where key issues across departments were reviewed in the presence of the Chief Secretary and senior administrative staff. The session underscored the importance of improved interdepartmental coordination and efficient public service delivery.
The developments mark a renewed push toward bolstering forensic science capabilities in Manipur amid rising demands for faster and more accurate criminal investigations.
