Imphal, August 4: In a significant move to enhance law enforcement and administrative efficiency, the Manipur government has greenlit the establishment of a new Secretariat Police Station at Mantripukhri, along with the creation of 12 Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) posts across the state.

The decision follows a comprehensive proposal by the Manipur Police Department, aimed at improving policing capacity in light of increasing security demands and the ongoing administrative expansion. This development comes ahead of the planned relocation of the State Civil Secretariat and Police Headquarters to Mantripukhri, reinforcing the need for robust security coverage in the area.

The proposed Secretariat Police Station will be strategically located to serve not only the Secretariat and Police HQ, but also several key institutions in the region, including the Manipur High Court, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and the Forest Office Complex. This newly dedicated station is designed to ensure comprehensive law enforcement presence in the emerging capital complex.

To provide effective leadership, a new SDPO post — SDPO (New Capital Complex) — has been sanctioned under the Imphal East District. This officer will oversee both the new Secretariat Police Station and the existing Heingang Police Station, facilitating improved coordination, rapid response capabilities, and enhanced administrative command.

In a broader push to strengthen district policing, 11 more SDPO positions have been created across both newly formed and existing districts. These include:

Newly Created Districts:

  • Kangpokpi: SDPO/Kangpokpi, SDPO/Sapermeina, SDPO/New Keithelmanbi
  • Tengnoupal: SDPO/Tengnoupal
  • Kamjong: SDPO/Kasom Khullen, SDPO/Kamjong
  • Pherzawl: SDPO/Parbung
  • Noney: SDPO/Noney

Existing Districts:

  • Imphal East: SDPO/New Capital Complex
  • Chandel: SDPO/Chakpikarong
  • Churachandpur: SDPO/Singhat
  • Tamenglong: SDPO/Tamei

These new posts are expected to close critical gaps in police supervision, especially in remote and border districts where administrative and investigative oversight has been limited.

In keeping with its commitment to fiscal responsibility, the government will reallocate existing manpower for these posts. The SDPO roles will be filled by reassigning current Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or Assistant Commandant positions, while the Officer-in-Charge (OC) for the new Secretariat Police Station will be appointed by converting an existing Inspector post. This approach ensures better policing without adding financial strain to the state’s budget.

Officials believe this structural revamp will have a far-reaching impact on policing in Manipur. Key benefits are expected to include:

  • Enhanced command and operational efficiency
  • Stronger investigative oversight and crime prevention
  • Improved security in sensitive border areas
  • Quicker and more coordinated law and order responses
  • Optimal use of existing police personnel

The Manipur government emphasized its ongoing commitment to modernizing the state’s policing infrastructure through sustainable and citizen-focused reforms.
