SENAPATI, Feb 22: The 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Paonumai Chukhoi Niih (Stone Seats) was marked by a grand Platinum Jubilee celebration in the picturesque village of Khumai (Tunggam), located in the Paomata Subdivision of Senapati District, Manipur. The event, which took place at Paonumai Chukhoi, Yemai Kidzii Adu, Tunggam Khullen, on February 22, 2025, commemorated 75 years of unity and brotherhood among the Paonumai clan, a distinguished clan under Yemai Khell of Khumai.
The celebration was a remarkable display of cultural pride and the deep-rooted connection that the Paonumai people share, reinforcing their blood relationships and unique bond. The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, elders, and villagers, all gathered to honor the legacy of the Chukhoi (Stone Seat) and the clan’s historical ties.
The event was graced by Woba Joram, the Working President of the NPF, Manipur State Unit, who was the chief guest for the occasion. Apao Dai, the oldest man from the Paonumai Clan, served as the Guest of Honour, and Mrs. D. Pokhorou, the wife of the late Lt. Khakhai, also a prominent figure and the oldest woman of the clan, was a distinguished guest and Chief Patron of the event. In addition, several local leaders attended, including the Chairman of the Khumai (Tunggam) Union and Chairperson of the Khumai (Tunggam) Women’s Society, alongside various Khell leaders from the region.
The event also saw the presence of the four Khumai (Tunggam) revenue chairmen and secretaries, as well as representatives from Aramai and Avoimai Development Councils. Additionally, all the married sisters of the Paonumai clan were invited and honored with their husbands and families, marking a truly inclusive occasion for the entire community.
The day’s festivities kicked off with a jubilant procession of whooping as the chief guest and other dignitaries entered the Jubilee Hall, greeted by the sounds of celebration. The clan chairman initiated the flag hoisting, followed by the unveiling of the Jubilee monolith by Woba Joram, marking the official commencement of the celebrations.
The program was skillfully moderated by Lohrii Vizo, with an opening prayer led by Pavi Pao, Pastor of CRC Chiephobouzou Town. A special welcome song by The Vibrant Male set a lively tone for the proceedings, and a heartfelt welcome address was given by Th Punii, the Chairman of the Paonumai Clan. Following the welcome address, Traole Veinii took the stage to lead the introduction and presentation hour, while the ladies of Paonumai performed a beautiful folk tune: Paonumai Pfii (Women), showcasing the clan’s rich cultural heritage.
The speeches that followed delved into the history and spirit of the Paonumai clan. Apao Dai, the oldest man of the Paonumai clan, reflected on the tales of the forefathers and the enduring strength of the clan. This was followed by a traditional voice presentation by Paonumai Puh (Male), which added a ceremonial touch to the event.
In his speech, Woba Joram expressed his gratitude for being invited as the chief guest and highlighted the deep personal connection he feels with the Paonumai clan, noting his maternal descent from the clan. He praised the clan’s unity, calling it an exemplary model of brotherhood and solidarity for the community and beyond.
A heartfelt moment in the celebration was the honoring of all married sisters of the Paonumai clan, who were presented with gifts and tokens of appreciation, symbolizing the love and respect that permeate the Paonumai community. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Paul Benedict Pao, the Secretary of the Paonumai Clan, followed by a benediction from D. Traole.
The evening culminated in a grand mass dinner, where attendees indulged in an array of traditional and contemporary dishes, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of Paonumai culture.
