IMPHAL, Jan 2: A hand grenade was discovered outside the residence of Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a man who has been missing since November from the Leimakhong Military Station in Imphal West. The grenade was found near the entrance of Singh’s house in Loitang Khunou, Imphal West district, sparking alarm in the neighborhood. Authorities quickly responded, securing and neutralizing the grenade.
Accompanying the grenade was a note that demanded the dissolution of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to Singh’s disappearance and called for the establishment of a new committee. The note also specified that no land contractors should be included in the new JAC.
Singh, who went missing on November 25, has been the subject of ongoing protests led by the JAC. The committee has been calling for justice and answers regarding his disappearance. Last week, Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed that Singh had disappeared from the military station, and the case would be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Singh, originally from Assam’s Cachar district, was working as a supervisor for a contractor collaborating with the Military Engineering Services (MES) at the Leimakhong Military Station, which is part of the 57th Mountain Division. Military sources have stated that Singh is from the Metei community.
To date, police have mobilized over 2,000 security personnel in search of Singh. Amid the protests, Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo confirmed that all relevant documents have been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office, as well as to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, for further action.
