NEW DELHI, Jan 3: With the onset of winter, cases of heart attacks and heart failure have surged, according to Dr. Tarun Sahni, a general physician and internal medicine specialist at Apollo Hospital in Delhi. Dr. Sahni explained that cold temperatures cause blood vessels in the extremities to contract, which leads to an increase in blood pressure. This heightened pressure places additional strain on the heart and also affects vulnerable areas of the brain, raising the risk of strokes.
“In winter, the blood vessels in the periphery contract due to the cold, causing blood pressure to rise,” Dr. Sahni explained. “This elevated pressure can damage vulnerable areas in the brain, leading to strokes. Similarly, the heart has to pump harder through the narrowed vessels, increasing the risk of heart attacks and heart failure.”
Dr. Sahni also advised individuals with lung conditions to take extra precautions when going outdoors during the winter months. He recommended that people step out during the day when the sun is shining and pollution levels are relatively lower. He emphasized the need to minimize exposure to both cold temperatures and pollution, especially for those with pre-existing health issues.
“We advise patients with lung diseases to step out during the day when the sun is out and pollution levels are lower. Exercise and precautions should be taken to avoid cold exposure and pollution,” Dr. Sahni said.
