Shillong, August 18: Meghalaya police seized heroin valued at over ₹4.8 crore in two separate operations in East Jaintia Hills district, arresting four persons, including three women from Manipur.
Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) along with district police intercepted a car at Umkiang patrolling post on Sunday. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 961.33 grams of heroin packed in 80 soap boxes, hidden in three travel bags. The three arrested women, Kimnei (33), Dimkhothing (47) and Ngaiting (40), all residents of Khongjom, Tengnoupal, Manipur were travelling from Churachandpur to Shillong. They were booked under the NDPS Act at Lumshnong police station.
In another operation the same day, police intercepted a passenger bus at Byndihati village under Khliehriat police station. A man from Shillong was apprehended after 91.86 grams of heroin packed in nine soap boxes were seized from his possession. The consignment, valued at nearly ₹40 lakh, was also traced to have originated from Manipur.
Officials said investigations are underway to track the inter-state drug syndicate involved.
