GUWAHATI, Dec 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday endorsed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s allegations on illegal infiltration in West Bengal, saying the remarks reflected the “factual position” on the ground and calling for stronger action along the West Bengal–Bangladesh border.

Reacting to Shah’s comments, Sarma said that while Assam and Tripura were actively fighting infiltration, West Bengal was “opening its doors to infiltrators”. He stressed the need for robust border management and welcomed the Home Minister’s proposal for a national grid to curb illegal cross-border movement.

Shah had earlier launched a sharp attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, accusing it of allowing infiltration from Bangladesh for electoral gains and posing a threat to national security. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, the Union Home Minister alleged that the West Bengal government was not providing land for border fencing, thereby hampering efforts to stop infiltration.

Calling infiltration a serious national security concern, Shah said the issue would be central to the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for April 2026. He also alleged that fear, corruption and misgovernance had become the hallmark of the Trinamool Congress regime.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly rejected the accusations, accusing the BJP of spreading misinformation. She dismissed claims that her government had withheld land for border fencing and argued that infiltration was not an issue confined to West Bengal alone.
