GUWAHATI, June 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called upon his Meghalaya counterpart, Conrad K. Sangma, to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the tragic death of 25-year-old Namrata Bora, who died in a road accident in Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya, on June 4. Sarma’s request came after concerns were raised by the victim’s family and well-wishers, who have questioned the official accounts of the accident.

Namrata Bora, a resident of Assam’s Golaghat district, was traveling from Shillong to Guwahati when the vehicle she was traveling in (AS 01 EV 9578) collided with a stationary truck at Shangbangla near Nongpoh. The accident occurred around 4:44 am, and despite being rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, Namrata succumbed to her injuries. Four other passengers in the vehicle escaped with only minor injuries.

Expressing his concern over the matter, CM Sarma took to his official social media handle, urging the Meghalaya CM to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. “In view of the concerns raised by the bereaved family and well-wishers, I request that a fair and impartial enquiry be conducted by a senior police officer to ensure that all facts surrounding the incident are brought to light,” Sarma wrote on X.

The victim’s family has demanded a detailed investigation, alleging discrepancies in the police report. According to the first information report (FIR), six people were present in the car, but survivors later revised this to five. Adding to the controversy, a video circulating online shows five individuals inside the vehicle, contradicting the initial statement. The video also raises further suspicions as reports suggest that the car was driven by the son of an AIUDF MLA from Assam, which has fueled public concerns regarding potential political influence on the case.

While a case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station, the investigation is under scrutiny due to the sensitive nature of the incident. CM Sarma has requested that a senior police officer be appointed to lead the inquiry to ensure transparency and address the family’s appeal for justice.
