NEW DELHI, Jan 4: Experts have reassured the public that infections from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which can cause flu-like symptoms, are generally not a cause for concern. This virus, which has recently been reported as increasing in cases in China, leads to symptoms such as a cough, fever, blocked nose, and some shortness of breath, resembling the common cold.
Gautam Menon, Dean of Research at Ashoka University, emphasized that HMPV has been around for over two decades and is common during the winter season when respiratory illnesses rise. He clarified that HMPV accounts for only 5 to 10 percent of all respiratory infections during the flu season, with mild symptoms typically experienced by most individuals. However, the elderly and young children may face more severe health issues.
Despite the increase in cases, particularly in China, Menon assured that there is no need to worry. He compared HMPV to the Covid-19 virus, explaining that, unlike Covid-19, HMPV is not a novel virus, meaning most people have likely encountered it before. He advised the elderly to take precautions, including regular handwashing and wearing masks.
Biologist Vinod Scaria also reassured the public, noting that HMPV shows a seasonal pattern, with the peak of infections occurring during winter. He highlighted that HMPV is common in other parts of the world as well, with estimates suggesting that nearly one in ten lower respiratory tract infections in the U.S. are caused by this virus.
While experts pointed out the need for approved diagnostics and accelerated approvals for tests, they also reiterated that there is no reason for specific concern about HMPV, urging the public to take regular precautions during the winter flu season.
