NEW DELHI, June 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across large parts of India over the next seven days, as the southwest monsoon continues its vigorous advance. The forecast, released on Wednesday, predicts intense rain activity across northwest, central, east, and northeast India, with isolated pockets in Gujarat and Odisha expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall—exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours—on June 25.
The IMD reported that the monsoon has now progressed into the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea and further into regions of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. Conditions are favorable for further advancement into Delhi, more parts of Punjab, Haryana, and the rest of West Uttar Pradesh within the next 24 hours.
As per the forecast, regions at risk of very heavy rainfall include Konkan and Goa, the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, as well as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Rajasthan. The forecast also covers Bihar, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and both Coastal and Interior Karnataka, along with Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
While the rains are expected to bring much-needed relief to water-stressed areas, authorities have warned of possible flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable zones.
