IMD Issues Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across Northeast as Heatwave Grips Northern India

IMPHAL, June 9: As much of North India reels under intense heatwaves and dusty winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an extended weather advisory for the Northeast, forecasting a week-long spell of heavy to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several northeastern states.

According to IMD forecasts, Light/moderate rainfall at many/some places likely to continue over northeast India during next 7 days with isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh during 12th-15th; south Assam & Meghalaya during 10th-15th; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 09th-15th June.

In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are predicted across South Assam (June 10), and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura (June 9–13).

Meanwhile Delhi and NCR, along with large parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, face Yellow Alerts for heatwaves, dusty winds, and warm nights, the Northeast is set to experience the opposite — a wet and stormy week.

The IMD also predicts intense downpours in southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, highlighting the sharp contrast in weather patterns influenced by early monsoonal activity and climate variability.
