IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Northeast

NEW DELHI, Aug 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall today in parts of the Northeast, particularly affecting Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Arunachal Pradesh and Bihar.

States including Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are also expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next two days.

In addition, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely to impact the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and West Madhya Pradesh. The weather agency has advised caution, especially in areas vulnerable to flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging.

Further, strong surface winds are predicted at isolated locations over Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, which may affect marine and local outdoor activities.
