IMPHAL, Dec 19: Imphal witnessed an emotional outpouring on Friday as social activist and transgender rights advocate Malem Thongam returned to the state capital, concluding her 77-day bicycle peace mission that began in New Delhi on October 2, 2025. The campaign, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, was aimed at promoting reconciliation and harmony in Manipur amid prolonged ethnic unrest.
Thongam entered Imphal under tight security arrangements as large crowds lined the roads to welcome her with applause, garlands and folded hands, turning the streets into a powerful expression of solidarity and hope. Her journey, which passed through several states, focused on engaging with people affected by violence, listening to their stories of loss and appealing for unity and non-violence.
According to police, Thongam reached Sekmai Police Station on Thursday at around 4:30 am after travelling from Senapati district via National Highway-2 in a special Border Security Force convoy, despite objections raised earlier by the Committee on Tribal Unity. After completing necessary legal formalities along with five supporters, she proceeded towards Imphal.
Resuming her ride in the morning on Friday with five women cyclists, Thongam completed the final stretch of the journey. She was accorded a warm reception near Kangla Fort, where emotional scenes of tears, embraces and prayers marked the culmination of the peace ride.
Thongam’s mission assumed special significance against the backdrop of violence that has gripped Manipur since May 3, 2023, which has claimed nearly 300 lives and displaced thousands following clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Observers said her return symbolised a renewed appeal for peace, highlighting how individual courage and conviction can inspire collective healing in a state yearning for normalcy.
