AHMEDABAD, Dec 2: The Indian U-17 football team scripted a historic milestone on Sunday, defeating Iran 2–1 in a must-win clash at Ahmedabad’s EKA Arena to qualify for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026. The Blue Colts, needing nothing less than a victory, delivered a spirited comeback to finish as group toppers in the qualifiers.
Iran, favourites heading into the match, struck first with a 19th-minute opener. But India restored hope just before halftime when captain Dallalmuon Gangte calmly converted a penalty in stoppage time (45+1’). The decisive moment arrived in the 52nd minute, as Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam netted the winner to send home fans into raptures.
Goalkeeper Rajrup Sarkar produced a standout performance, denying Iran multiple chances and ensuring India held on to the crucial lead. With two wins from four matches, India finished ahead of Iran—who were eliminated—and Lebanon, who placed third.
This triumph marks India’s 10th appearance in the U-17 Asian Cup and makes the Blue Colts the fourth Indian team to qualify for the Asian Cup 2026, joining the U-17, U-20 and senior women’s teams already through.
