NEW DELHI, Oct 29: The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) has issued a warning about illegal payment gateways created by transnational organized cybercriminals using mule bank accounts for money laundering services. The Ministry of Home Affairs disclosed that recent nationwide raids by the Gujarat Police and Andhra Pradesh Police have uncovered these illegal digital payment systems that utilize rented or mule accounts to launder funds obtained from various cybercrimes.
These mule accounts are managed remotely from abroad, enabling the establishment of illegal payment gateways. Criminal organizations use these gateways to accept deposits for illicit activities, including fraudulent investment scams, offshore betting and gambling sites, and fake stock trading platforms. As soon as the crime proceeds are received, the funds are swiftly transferred to other accounts to obscure their source.
In response to these developments, the I4C has advised citizens against selling or renting their bank accounts, company registration certificates, or Udhyam Aadhaar Registration certificates. Engaging in such actions can lead to legal ramifications, including arrest, as illicit funds deposited in these accounts carry serious consequences.
The I4C stresses the importance of public vigilance and encourages individuals to report any cybercrime immediately by calling helpline number 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in. Citizens are also urged to follow the “CyberDost” account on social media for additional information and cybersecurity tips. The Ministry, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a cyber-secure Bharat.
