In a swift and coordinated operation, the Indian Navy successfully intercepted two Sri Lankan flagged fishing vessels suspected of narcotics smuggling in the Arabian Sea. The operation, based on information provided by the Sri Lankan Navy, led to the seizure of approximately 500 kg of Crystal Meth.
The Indian Navy responded promptly after receiving intelligence on probable narcotics smuggling activities in the region. Utilizing extensive surveillance, including Indian Naval Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, and with inputs from the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region), Gurugram, the Navy tracked the vessels. An Indian Naval ship was also deployed to assist in the operation.
On November 24 and 25, after continuous surveillance and coordination between aerial assets and the naval ship, both vessels were identified and boarded by the ship’s boarding team. The operation resulted in the successful seizure of the narcotics.
To further support the operation, an additional Indian Navy ship was tasked to augment the anti-narcotics effort. The boats, along with their crew and the seized drugs, are now being handed over to Sri Lankan authorities for legal action.
