BENGALURU, Nov 19: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched its most sophisticated communications satellite, GSAT-20, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, USA, on Monday night.

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath announced that the launch was a resounding success, confirming that the satellite is functioning well and that its solar panels have been deployed. GSAT-20 is designed to provide broadband services in remote areas and in-flight internet connectivity for passenger aircraft, with an operational lifespan of 14 years. Notably, this marks the first instance where ISRO has launched a satellite using a SpaceX rocket through its commercial arm, New Space India Limited (NSIL).

Weighing in at 4,700 kg, GSAT-20 is classified as one of India’s heaviest communication satellites. Due to its weight, the satellite was deemed too heavy for India’s own rocket, the LVM-3 (commonly known as ‘Bahubali’), prompting the decision to partner with SpaceX for the launch.

Previously, India had relied on French launch service provider Arianespace for heavy satellite launches. However, with Arianespace lacking any operational rockets at present, SpaceX emerged as the only reliable option. The Falcon 9 rocket, known for its capabilities as a heavy-lifter, can carry payloads of up to 8,300 kg (8.3 tonnes) to geostationary transfer orbit.

This successful launch reinforces ISRO’s growing capabilities and strategic partnerships in the global space industry, marking a significant milestone for India’s space endeavors.
