Imphal, August 22: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death of 52-year-old Hijam Ibemcha Devi at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has suspended its indefinite blockade along the Imphal–Dimapur Road at Sekmai following an understanding reached with RIMS authorities.
The JAC, however, warned that the agitation would resume if its demands remain unmet. Representatives of the local MLA and the Officer-in-Charge of Sekmai Police Station also joined the dialogue, which led to the temporary suspension of the protest.
RIMS, in an official statement, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and confirmed that an internal inquiry has already been initiated, with results expected soon. The institute clarified that Ibemcha, who was admitted on August 14 with a right leg fracture, suffered sudden cardiorespiratory failure on August 19 before undergoing her scheduled surgery. Despite intensive efforts by doctors, she could not be revived.
The hospital further stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination and assured full cooperation with investigations by the authorities.
