Imphal, July 24: The Kuki National Front (KNF) has issued a strong denial of recent media reports alleging its involvement in coercing villagers and misappropriating compensation funds along the Imphal–Kangpokpi stretch of the Asian Highway-2 (AH-2). Terming the allegations as “fabricated, defamatory, and aimed at derailing the peace process,” the KNF clarified that it had no role in such activities and remains committed to developmental efforts.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, Lh. Stephen, Information and Publicity Secretary of the KNF, firmly rejected claims that KNF cadres intimidated locals or interfered with the government’s compensation disbursement for road expansion projects. “KNF has no role whatsoever in extorting compensation or in any form of coercion. These are utterly baseless and motivated accusations aimed at maligning our organisation and disrupting the mutual trust we’ve built with our people,” Stephen stated.
The KNF reiterated that it operates in full compliance with the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement signed with both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur. The organisation emphasized its support for development projects, especially those that enhance public infrastructure and uplift local communities.
“KNF has consistently acted in support of development, not against it. We have neither obstructed nor interfered with road construction works. Instead, we have facilitated the smooth implementation of such projects wherever necessary to ensure timely progress,” the statement read.
As a stakeholder in the ongoing political dialogue with the government, the KNF expressed concern that such reports are part of a “deliberate smear campaign” intended to sabotage the peace process. “The timing and nature of these accusations raise serious doubts about their intent. They are not only unfounded but also harmful to the spirit of peace, reconciliation, and mutual cooperation that we are trying to nurture,” Stephen remarked.
Calling for responsible journalism, the KNF appealed to civil society organisations, village authorities, and media outlets to verify facts before publishing unsubstantiated claims. “Spreading unverified and sensationalist reports without due diligence undermines public trust, jeopardises community harmony, and weakens the peace process,” the group warned.
Reaffirming its commitment to the political, economic, and social aspirations of the Kuki people, the KNF concluded by stating: “No amount of slander or misinformation can weaken our resolve. The KNF stands with the people, and we will continue to uphold their rights and dignity with integrity and determination.”
