SENAPATI, June 6: The vital Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2 (NH-2), which had been disrupted for days due to landslides, flooding, and continuous heavy rainfall, has been successfully restored. The highway, a critical lifeline for transporting essential commodities into Manipur, had remained inaccessible, severely affecting the movement of goods and passenger traffic.

The swift and coordinated intervention of the Hon’ble Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Shri Th. Satyabrata Singh, and the Hon’ble MLA of Mao Assembly Constituency, Shri Losii Dikho, proved instrumental in reopening the route. Their efforts, in collaboration with key officials from Nagaland, led to the restoration of the NH-2 via the Kedima Route, which borders Nagaland.

In response to the situation and under the direction of Hon’ble Speaker Th. Satyabrata Singh, MLA Losii Dikho conducted a survey of alternative roads leading from Mao Gate in Manipur to facilitate the uninterrupted movement of passenger vehicles and six-wheeled heavy goods vehicles carrying food and essential items into the state.

Critical support came from the Government of Nagaland, with Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Neiphiu Rio and Deputy Chief Minister Shri T.R. Zeliang, who also oversees the Public Works Department and National Highways. Their involvement helped fast-track restoration work and clear routes hampered by years of under-maintenance and recent weather damage.

The affected road segments included the 8-kilometre stretch from Naga Students’ Union Martyrs Park Point to Kedima in Kohima and the entire 26-kilometre Mao to Chakhabama road. Both routes had suffered severe deformities due to prolonged neglect, compounded by the adverse weather conditions.

Efforts are ongoing to ensure the newly functional routes remain accessible and resilient, safeguarding the state’s access to essential commodities.
