Churachandpur, September 30: The Kuki Village Chiefs from Tengnoupal, Chandel, and Churachandpur districts have issued a joint communiqué declaring non-cooperation with the ongoing border fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border.
The chiefs expressed strong opposition, stating that the construction undermines their ancestral lands, disrupts traditional village boundaries, and threatens the livelihoods of the border communities. They clarified that they will not accept compensation or engage in negotiations until a political settlement is achieved and normalcy returns to the state.
Highlighting the long-standing concerns of the Kuki-Zo community, the statement noted that repeated press releases, rallies, and memoranda have already called for scrapping the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and halting the fencing project. It also recalled that the United Naga Council (UNC) voiced similar opposition following unsuccessful talks with the government.
Appealing to authorities, the chiefs demanded an immediate suspension of fencing activities and the withdrawal of security forces and construction machinery from affected villages to avoid further tensions.
The communiqué was endorsed by more than 20 chiefs from villages including Neh Shingnu, Lhungchin, Molm, Moreh, and other border areas. They reiterated their stand that the fencing not only threatens community rights and security but also disregards historical and cultural ties across the Indo-Myanmar border.
