IMPHAL, June 23: Linthoi Chanambam of Manipur has become the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Berlin Junior European Cup 2025. The 18-year-old athlete from Mayang Imphal, Imphal West district, claimed the top spot in the -63kg weight category, solidifying her reputation as one of India’s most promising young judokas.
Linthoi’s latest achievement marks a significant step in her career, following her earlier success in the -57kg category, where she secured the world title at the 2022 Cadet World Championships in Sarajevo. Now competing in a higher weight class, she delivered a powerful performance throughout the tournament, which saw participation from 618 athletes representing 37 countries.
Representing the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Linthoi exhibited remarkable composure and technique as she advanced through the rounds. In the final bout, she defeated Jaelynn Chipan of France, a top-seeded contender, to claim gold — a result that marks a turning point for Indian judo on the European circuit.
The Manipur Government congratulated Linthoi for her groundbreaking performance. The government stated that Linthoi brought immense pride to the nation and the state by defeating Jaelynn Chipan of France in a stellar performance that reflects her unwavering dedication, discipline and spirit of excellence.
“Manipur celebrates this glorious victory and stands proud of Linthoi’s continued success on the international stage. May this inspiring achievement pave the way for many more milestones ahead” the statement added.3
