IMPHAL, Feb 24: A special meeting of the BJP state legislators, scheduled for February 24 at the residence of MLA Sapam Kunjakeswor (Keba), has been postponed until further notice as many legislators declined to attend, citing personal reasons. The meeting, initially set for 2:00 PM at Tera Sagolband, Imphal West, was meant to address the evolving political crisis in the wake of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9.

A notification signed by BJP MLAs K. Robindro Singh and Kh. Ibomcha Singh confirmed the postponement, mentioning that several legislators were unavailable due to being out of station, medical reasons, or unavoidable personal circumstances. The notification did not provide further details on why some members refused to attend, but sources suggest that the central BJP leadership may have issued a strict warning against holding such a meeting.

The meeting was intended to address the political uncertainty following the resignation of N. Biren Singh and the imposition of President’s Rule in the state. Some lawmakers, dissatisfied with the lack of leadership, had taken the initiative to organize the gathering in an effort to reach a consensus on forming a new government.

As per the Constitution of India, a new government can only be reinstated after the law and order situation is brought under control. Political observers now suggest that the state could face months of uncertainty before an elected government is in place, with the political landscape still very much in flux.
