Imphal, August 18: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator L Susindro Meitei has accused the Congress of adopting contradictory positions on the issue of President’s Rule in Manipur, claiming that the opposition party was the first to demand its imposition.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the Khurai constituency MLA recalled that while BJP ministers had wanted their government to continue, “the number of people who didn’t want the government to exist was many, and it finally had to go.”
He alleged that Congress leaders, including one of its MPs in Parliament, had initially demanded President’s Rule, but were now calling for the restoration of popular government or fresh elections. “They keep saying what they cannot do with five MLAs. However, those five have been the most problematic. Those five should have worked according to the interests of Manipur,” the former Public Health Engineering Minister remarked.
Susindro also accused Congress of triggering the political instability that led to the fall of the state government. “The beginning of the dissolution of our government started with the five MLAs of Congress. When President’s Rule was first imposed, the Congress president had said that one of the engines of the double-engine government has been struck with a Brahmastra missile,” he said.
On the current political situation, the BJP MLA asserted that President’s Rule was likely to remain in place. “There are many who favour it and demanded it. On the outside, these people speak against the imposition of President’s Rule, but internally they favour it. Under the existing circumstances, President’s Rule is likely to continue. You can see clearly the political drama being played,” he added.
