KANGPOKPI, June 18: In a powerful gesture of solidarity and legal outreach, the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice K. Somashekar, visited the Mandop Relief Camp in Ward No. 11 of Kangpokpi Town on Wednesday as part of a Promotional Legal Aid and Awareness Campaign organized by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA).
Justice Somashekar, who also serves as the Patron-in-Chief of MASLSA, was accompanied by Justice Alek Muivah, Secretary of MASLSA, and other legal dignitaries. The visit underscored the judiciary’s commitment to the protection of vulnerable and displaced communities affected by ongoing unrest.
Addressing the camp inmates and officials, Justice Somashekar praised the coordinated efforts of government bodies, peace organizations, and volunteers who have come forward to support the displaced. Emphasizing the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and social change, he described it as the “most valuable material possession” necessary to eliminate stigma and inequality.
Reaffirming the constitutional guarantee of justice, Justice Somashekar spoke about the vital role of free legal aid, especially for tribal and marginalized communities. “Equality before the law is a cornerstone of our Constitution. Access to justice must not depend on social or economic status,” he remarked.
Justice Alek Muivah further enlightened the attendees on Article 39A of the Indian Constitution, which ensures free legal aid to the underprivileged. He outlined key initiatives such as the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Lok Adalats, and the availability of a toll-free legal helpline for legal assistance.
During the visit, MASLSA also distributed essential relief supplies to 38 displaced families residing in the camp. In a symbolic gesture of gratitude, the Senapati and Kangpokpi Bar Association presented traditional shawls to both Justices.
The event witnessed the presence of Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari (IAS), Superintendent of Police Manoj Prabhakar (IPS), Additional District Magistrate N. Shokhongam Baite (MCS), district-level officers, and members of the legal fraternity from Senapati and Kangpokpi.
