IMPHAL, Nov 22: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has vehemently condemned the recent violent attacks and looting of properties belonging to ministers and MLAs amid the ongoing protests in the state. While expressing empathy for those protesting against the tragic deaths of innocent civilians, the CM decried the senseless destruction and theft carried out under the guise of democratic expression.

Speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the swearing in ceremony of Justice D Krishnakumar at Raj Bhavan, CM Singh emphasized that while the government supports genuine protests against the loss of life, especially the killing of women and children in Jiribam, he could not tolerate actions such as looting and arson carried out by certain gangs masquerading as part of the democratic movement. “I already said and condemned. Those who are genuinely agitating against the killings of innocent people are genuine, and we support their movement and agitation because everyone has the right to democratically agitate. But in the name of the democratic movement, some gangs have looted, burned ministers’ houses, and looted their properties,” he said.

Singh also noted that these actions led to the temporary suspension of internet services in the region as a measure to curb further violence. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in such unlawful activities.

The Chief Minister emphasized that legal action has already been initiated against those involved in the criminal acts. “We have already identified those responsible through CCTV footage. I feel ashamed to express publicly that such actions are happening in Manipur, where looting is taking place in the name of agitation. This is a matter of shame. We will take legal action,” he added.

The statement comes amid growing unrest in the state, where protests continue over the killing of civilians. Agitators have been demanding justice and accountability, but the Chief Minister has made it clear that while democratic rights to protest will be upheld, acts of violence, looting, and destruction will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, and the authorities are committed to ensuring that those responsible for the attacks and looting will be held accountable.
