KANGPOKPI, Jan 2: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi, has announced a 12-hour total shutdown in protest against the government’s inaction on their demand for the withdrawal of central forces from Saibol village, located in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.

In a press release, the CoTU stated that shutdown will commence at 2:00 pm on January 2 and will continue for 12 hours, concluding at 2:00 am on January 3. This latest move intensifies the ongoing indefinite economic blockade along National Highway 2, a key transportation route.

“The presence of central forces in Saibol, despite widespread concerns from the tribal populace, symbolizes a grave disregard for the voices of our people. This deployment has not only disrupted the everyday lives of civilians but has also created an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, undermining the peace and harmony of our communities,” the release added.

The government’s handling of the situation has drawn ire, with CoTU stating, “The Government’s indifference to our peaceful appeals for dialogue is unacceptable. We are left with no choice but to intensify our protest.” The 12-hour shutdown will halt all vehicular movement, close business establishments, suspend educational activities, and shut down government offices across the region. However, essential services, including healthcare and emergency responses, will remain operational.

The call for the shutdown follows a violent incident in Saibol where security forces allegedly used tear gas and physical assault against Kuki-Zo women who were protesting the occupation of community bunkers by the central forces. Reports suggest that at least fifteen women were injured during the crackdown, which CoTU members have condemned as a gross human rights violation.

CoTU reaffirmed its demand for the immediate withdrawal of central forces stationed in Saibol and called for constructive dialogue to address the underlying issues causing the unrest. They described their actions, including the indefinite economic blockade along National Highway-2 and the upcoming shutdown, as expressions of deep frustration and helplessness due to the government’s inaction.

The CoTU also urged the public to support their cause and called on the government to engage in meaningful discussions to resolve the ongoing crisis. The committee emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and well-being of the tribal communities and vowed to continue their efforts until justice is achieved.
