IMPHAL, April 8: Massive protests against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 continue to intensify across Manipur, with large-scale demonstrations reported from Imphal East and Bishnupur districts on Tuesday. Thousands of people—men, women, and children, took to the streets in a show of civil resistance, demanding the repeal of the newly passed legislation.

In Imphal East, people from three major Muslim-populated areas like Kairang, Khabeisoi, and Khurai Khumidok participated in a rally held at Khumidok Bazar-Heikrumakhong area. The protest saw participants from two Assembly Constituencies, Khurai and Heingang, who formed human chains, shouted slogans, and marched to voice their opposition to the Act, which they believe undermines the interests and autonomy of the Muslim community.

Beyond Imphal East, similar protests have spread to other Muslim-majority areas, including Thoubal and Bishnupur districts. On April 6, tensions escalated when an angry mob torched the residence of Asker Ali in Lilong, Thoubal. Authorities were forced to impose curfew measures to restore order. While Asker Ali later issued a public apology for offending community sentiments, his son claimed the attack was personal and not directly tied to the bill.

In Bishnupur district, around 2,000 protesters gathered in Borayangbi under the banner of Maqami Jamiatul Ulaama Borayangbi and other civil society groups to vocally oppose the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. Protesters carried placards with slogans such as “Reject the Waqf Bill,” “Protect Muslim Rights,” and “Waqf Act 2025: A Threat to Fundamental Rights.” Chants against the central government and its leaders also echoed during the demonstration.

Sayed Ali Aribam, a prominent figure in the protest, expressed concern that the Act could result in unjust control over Waqf properties, which are traditionally reserved for religious and educational purposes within the Muslim community. “This Act violates constitutional rights and the traditions that define the Muslim identity in India,” he said.

He further called for nationwide collective action against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, urging both citizens and political leaders to defend the Constitution and protect fundamental rights.
