IMPHAL, Jan 27: In a significant move to tackle extortion-related issues, the Manipur state government has set up a dedicated Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department. The newly established cell will consist of representatives from the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Assam Rifles, and the Indian Army.
According to a press release issued by the Chief Secretary of Manipur, the aim of this initiative is to create a robust and efficient response mechanism to address extortion demands and related activities, ensuring the safety and security of the public.
Reports indicate that several individuals, including government officials, have been subjected to threats via calls, messages, or letters from unlawful organizations, warning of severe consequences if their extortion demands are not met. These activities have raised concerns over the law and order situation in the state.
In light of this, Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh announced that the new cell would operate 24/7, with a toll-free number, 1800 202 3326, set up for the public to report any incidents of extortion or threats. The Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell will coordinate with the relevant police stations to take appropriate action upon receiving reports.
The Chief Secretary urged the public, including government officials, to report any such cases to the cell and advised citizens to avoid visiting unsafe locations. The state government hopes this initiative will serve as an efficient mechanism for addressing extortion cases and help restore safety and order within the region.
