Imphal, September 16: The Manipur government has announced the closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, on September 17 due to severe flooding and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall across the state.

According to the state’s Water Resources Department, most of the major rivers are flowing above the danger mark, while the Thoubal River remains above high flood level, causing inundation in several low-lying areas. Officials confirmed multiple breaches along the Imphal River in Imphal East, leading to widespread flooding.

“In view of the prevailing weather conditions in the state resulting in incidences of flood and landslides across various districts, all schools in the state including schools under the state government and central government, private schools, government aided schools and government un-aided schools shall remain closed on Wednesday, the 17th September 2025,” stated in an order issued by the Director of Education (Schools) on Tuesday.

This marks the second consecutive day of closure, as all institutions had already remained shut on Tuesday in view of the worsening weather. The decision follows widespread flooding after the breaching of the Iril riverbank and the overflowing of the Imphal, Thoubal, and Nongdambi rivers.

Meanwhile, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Porompat has begun to flood, forcing the hospital authority to issue an urgent circular for the evacuation of patients and suspension of new admissions.
