IMPHAL, June 10: In a cautious step towards normalcy, the Manipur government on Tuesday eased curfew restrictions in three districts of the Imphal valley — Imphal West, Imphal East, and Bishnupur — allowing movement of residents between 5 AM and 5 PM. The move comes after several days of unrest sparked by the arrest of a key leader of the Meitei youth outfit, Arambai Tenggol.
While residents are now permitted to move about during the day, all activities deemed likely to “disrupt law and order” remain strictly prohibited.
Prohibitory orders were originally imposed across five Imphal valley districts starting the night of June 7, after violent protests erupted following the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) arrest of an Arambai Tenggol leader. The protests had resulted in widespread blockades, arson, and confrontations with security forces.
In tandem with the curfew, the government also enforced a five-day suspension of internet and mobile data services — including VSAT and VPN connections — in an attempt to curb the spread of inflammatory content and misinformation on social media platforms.
Despite the partial easing of curbs, officials have maintained a high security alert across the region. Authorities have emphasized that any activities posing a threat to public order during the relaxed hours will invite strict legal action.
Notably, essential government services such as law enforcement, emergency response, banking, and financial institutions are exempt from the curfew and internet restrictions, ensuring the continued functioning of key public services.
