GUWAHATI, July 4: A 28-year-old man from Jiribam district in Manipur has alleged that doctors at a private hospital in Silchar, Assam, surgically removed his genitals without his knowledge or consent during what was meant to be a routine biopsy procedure.

The victim, Atikur Rahman, visited RE Hospital in Silchar on June 19 for treatment of a genital infection. He said the attending doctor, identified as Dr. Eden Sinha, advised him to undergo a biopsy. However, Rahman claimed that when he regained consciousness after the procedure, he discovered that his genitals had been surgically removed.

“I went to the RE Hospital for an infection. Dr. Eden Sinha suggested a biopsy. But when I woke up after the surgery, I found that my genitals had been removed without my consent. The doctor didn’t give any clear reason,” Rahman told reporters, visibly distressed.

Rahman has filed a formal complaint at the Gungoor police outpost, accusing Dr. Sinha of serious medical negligence and violation of bodily autonomy. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

“Now I am helpless. My life is ruined. I tried reaching out to the doctor multiple times, but he never responded. I’m mentally and physically shattered,” Rahman said. He also claimed that another hospital refused to examine the operated area when he sought a second opinion.

A relative of the victim demanded accountability, stating, “This is a case of serious medical negligence. Who will take responsibility for the trauma Atikur is going through?”

The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with calls for a thorough investigation. Rahman has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and ensure justice.

This is not the first time concerns have been raised about alleged medical negligence in hospitals in Assam.
