Imphal, July 26: The Government of Manipur solemnly observed Kargil Vijay Diwas on Saturday, honouring the courage and sacrifices of India’s armed forces during the 1999 Kargil War. The commemoration was held at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) auditorium in Imphal and was attended by Members of the Legislative Assembly, senior military and police officials, and dignitaries from various government departments.

Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla described the day as one of “eternal remembrance and gratitude” to the fallen heroes. He highlighted that seven soldiers from Manipur had sacrificed their lives in the Kargil conflict, emphasizing the need to honour their legacy and uphold the values they fought for.

“Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us that the sacrifices made by our soldiers remain immortal. We remain forever indebted to them,” Governor Bhalla said. He also paid a special tribute to BSF martyr Deepak Chingakham, announcing the appointment of his younger brother, Chingakham Naoba Singh, as an Assistant Sub-Inspector in Manipur Police.

Referencing India’s recent security response, the Governor mentioned Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in retaliation to a Pakistan-sponsored terror attack. He stated that the operation targeted and destroyed nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, underscoring India’s resolute stance against terrorism.

Bhalla also addressed Manipur’s ongoing internal unrest, outlining a multi-pronged approach by the government to restore peace. He highlighted combined operations by state and central forces that have led to the recovery of significant caches of illegal arms and ammunition, and reiterated efforts to combat extortion, cybercrimes, and illegal funding of armed groups.

On the humanitarian front, the Governor spoke about state-supported initiatives aimed at rehabilitating displaced persons through self-help groups, skill training, and startup missions. He emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue with civil society organizations from Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga communities to achieve voluntary resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

“Let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the Constitution, defending our sovereignty, and honouring the sacrifices made by our armed forces,” he concluded.

Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh also addressed the function, detailing the security measures undertaken across the state. He stated that thousands of looted arms and explosives have been recovered, and measures such as patrolling, border fencing, and task force deployment have significantly reduced infiltration and anti-social activities.

Singh noted that drug trafficking networks have been disrupted and that over 1,000 illegal arms have been surrendered, many following a public appeal from the Governor. “This is a positive indicator that people are distancing themselves from violence and embracing reconciliation,” he added.

Appealing to the youth, the DGP urged them to shun conflict and dedicate themselves to building a peaceful and united Manipur. “Your courage and discipline are essential in shaping the future of our state,” he said.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to honour the memory of the Kargil martyrs by striving for harmony, stability, and progress.
