Manipur Observes Nupi Lal Day 2024, Honors Women Freedom Fighters

IMPHAL, Dec 12: Manipur celebrated Nupee Lal Numit 2024 on Thursday, commemorating the heroic contributions of women freedom fighters who stood against British imperialism. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh led the tribute ceremony at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex, joined by Ministers, MLAs, and senior officials who paid floral homage to the brave women.

A formal program followed at the G.P. Women’s College Central Hall, with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh as the chief guest. Minister Th. Biswajit Singh presided over the event, while MLAs Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), S.S. Olish (Chandel AC), and Sagolshem Kebi Devi (Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC) graced the occasion as guests of honor.

In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the significance of Nupee Lal Numit in honoring the pivotal roles played by Manipuri women during the uprisings of 1904 and 1939 against British oppression. He also highlighted their contributions during the Seven Year Devastation (1819–1826) when they courageously opposed Burmese incursions.

CM Biren Singh praised the enduring bravery and leadership of Manipuri women, noting their prominent roles in contemporary issues concerning the state’s safety and welfare. He acknowledged their contributions in various sectors, including social, economic, art, culture, sports, and hospitality, in addition to their household responsibilities. He also lauded the cultural performances by Manipuri women at national and international events, showcasing the state’s rich heritage globally.

The Chief Minister highlighted several initiatives by the state government aimed at empowering women, such as the Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, which provides financial assistance of Rs. 500 per month to unemployed women over 40 years old. He also mentioned the construction of Ima markets across all districts to support women’s economic activities and financial aid given to women athletes to establish training centers for young talents.

Discussing the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 passed by the central government, CM Biren Singh underscored its significance in ensuring greater representation for women. He also detailed educational initiatives, including the Chief Minister’s Scholarship for Civil Service Coaching, the Coaching Scheme for NEET and JEE aspirants, and the establishment of District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) in every district.

The event also featured a Nupee Lal Drama presented by the Nupee Lal Memorial Association Drama Party and musical performances by artists from Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College.

The program was attended by Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, the Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur, senior officials, students of G.P. Women’s College, and women from across the state, marking a solemn yet inspiring tribute to Manipur’s women freedom fighters.
