Imphal, September 27: Manipur marked World Tourism Day with a state-level celebration at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband, Imphal West, under the global theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”
The event, organized by the Department of Tourism, highlighted the state’s cultural diversity through performances by various ethnic communities, while also addressing the challenges facing the tourism sector.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, attending as chief guest, said Manipur has the potential to emerge as a premier tourist destination owing to its scenic beauty, favorable climate, and rich cultural heritage. However, he acknowledged that security concerns and recent conflicts have curtailed tourist inflows. “Tourism thrives when visitors feel safe and assured. Strong coordination among stakeholders is essential to rebuild confidence,” he remarked.
Goel emphasized the need for sustainable practices such as Destination Management Organizations, heritage conservation, community participation, and infrastructure development. He called for positioning tourism as a driver of economic growth, youth empowerment, and cultural exchange.
Principal Secretary (Tourism) Arun Kumar Sinha noted that while infrastructure and connectivity have improved, many remote destinations remain difficult to access. He suggested simplifying local and protected area permits to unlock the state’s tourism potential.
The programme also felicitated tour operators and guides for their contributions to promoting Manipur’s tourism industry.
