IMPHAL, June 28: In a major crackdown on insurgent activity, Manipur Police have arrested six cadres of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) during a series of targeted operations across Imphal East and Imphal West districts. The operations, conducted over a 36-hour period, disrupted an ongoing extortion racket targeting local residents, officials said on Saturday.
According to police sources, the first arrests were made near the Manipur Legislative Assembly in Thangmeiband, where three individuals — Aheibam Johnson Singh alias Khonthang (27), Ningthoujam Scolia Devi alias Chaoba (25), and Salam Binita Devi alias Bemma alias Tamna (22) — were apprehended while allegedly extorting money from the public.

Acting on leads obtained during initial interrogations, police launched a second operation in Wangkei, Imphal East, which led to the arrest of Laishram Suraj Singh alias Ibungo (33) and Sapam Ningol Kshetrimayum (O) Ashangbi Devi (34).
The final arrest was made at Chingarel Tejpur under Lamlai Police Station, Imphal East, where Nongmeikapam Jilish Meitei (29) was taken into custody.
Police also seized ₹10,000 in cash, six mobile phones, a scooter, and several demand letters during the raids, confirming the group’s involvement in illegal extortion activities.
All six accused have been handed over to the concerned police stations for further legal proceedings. Manipur Police affirmed that the operations are part of a broader strategy to dismantle underground networks and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
