Imphal, September 24: In a major breakthrough, Manipur Police, along with Bishnupur Police, 33 Assam Rifles, and other security forces, arrested the prime accused in the September 19 ambush on Assam Rifles personnel at Sabal Leikai, Nambol in Bishnupur district.
The accused, identified as Khomdram Ojit Singh alias Keilal (47) of Awang Leikinthabi Awang Leikai, Imphal West, was apprehended during a joint operation launched around 1 AM today in the Kameng area of Imphal West district.
Police confirmed that Ojit Singh, a bailed-out member of the proscribed People’s Liberation Army (PLA), confessed to direct involvement in the ambush. He revealed that after the attack, he and his associates fled toward the Loktak Lake area to hide their weapons.
Following his disclosure, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition, including an A4 rifle with magazines, an HK rifle, two AK rifles, an INSAS rifle, three lathode shells, and large quantities of AK, M16, and INSAS ammunition. A mobile handset, wallet, and Aadhaar card used in the attack were also seized.
Police added that the accused had previously been arrested in 2007 but continued his links with the PLA. His interrogation has provided crucial leads, and further operations are underway to trace and arrest other militants involved in the ambush.
